VFLW decider canned

THE ongoing COVID-19 lockdown of metropolitan Melbourne has resulted in the VFLW grand final between Geelong and Collingwood being cancelled.

After being rescheduled four times, including most recently for AFL Grand Final weekend, the ongoing uncertainty around community sport and the shift into AFLW mode for both clubs left the AFL with no other option.

The Cats last played on July 31, beating Essendon in a preliminary final. The Magpies, who will be recognised as minor premier after going through the home-and-away season unbeaten, last played on July 10.

Both clubs wrote to the AFL saying the break and the start of preparations for the AFLW season would have prevented them from fielding a team.

“As a group, we have remained hopeful and focused throughout the uncertainty, and while it’s not the outcome we were hoping for, we understand and support the decision that’s been made,” acting Geelongb captain Claudia Gunjaca said.

“As disappointing as it is, it doesn’t take away from how proud we are of what we’ve been able to achieve this season.”

The 2022 VFLW season is expected to align with their AFLW counterparts in the early stages of the year.
