Cats continue streak

GEELONG has overcome a slow start and some shocking inaccuracy in front of goal to claim its seventh consecutive VFLW win.

After being held to one goal in the first three quarters, the Cats kicked five goals in the final term – including four in the last seven minutes – to overrun the Southern Saints for an 11-point victory at a wind-swept Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

“We started to use the ball a little bit better, and we got some really good match-ups, and the girls took their chances,” coach Andrew Bruce told Bay 93.9’s The Sideline View.

“In the second quarter, we kicked 1.8, so, realistically, we missed a lot of shots we should have got, which made the game a lot more difficult for us.

“But, I just love the endeavour of the girls, and they got there in the end.”

AFLW-listed Richelle Cranston kicked two of the last four goals and was Geelong’s only multiple goalkicker.

The Cats were best served by Tamara Smith, Sophie Van De Heuvel and debutant Chloe Leonard, who earned an opportunity at VFLW level after an impressive NAB League season with the GWV Rebels.

Geelong’s win keeps it in second spot on the ladder with three rounds to play, one game clear of third-placed Port Melbourne.

The Cats next face Carlton at IKON Park on Saturday.
