Back-to-back for VFLW Cats

GEELONG has posted consecutive wins for the first time in the 2019 VFL Women’s season after holding off Carlton by seven points in what became a rain-soaked IKON Park on Saturday.

Scores were tied when the Blues kicked the first goal of the last quarter. However, key forward Maddie Boyd was able to convert after being awarded a 50m penalty at the seven-minute mark and Cats held on for a 5.3 (33) to 4.2 (26) victory.

“Carlton brought a lot of pressure; we weren’t able to really capitalise,” coach Natalie Wood told Cats Media.

“We didn’t get the ball on our terms a great deal, but credit to our players, we did get those couple of goals early.

“We just kept trying to play to our structures. Even when the rain and wind picked up, we emphasised a couple of things we were trying to work on more so than some of the other points.”

VFL: CATS OUTLAST BLUES

AFL listed small forward Danni Orr kicked three goals for the second consecutive week in an impressive display.

“In a low-scoring game, when you’ve got a dominant forward kicking three goals, that’s fantastic,” Wood said.

“But it’s probably not even her reward on the scoreboard but Danni’s transition ability.

“She’s getting on the half-back line and applying a lot of pressure, and helping us release the ball and moving into the forward line, as well.

“She’s really worked on her fitness but also her cleanliness by hand and by foot.”

Midfielders Jordy Ivey, Julie Crocket-Grills and Maddy Keryk also worked hard in the Geelong midfield.

The Cats will face a tough challenge when they travel to Box Hill City Oval next Saturday for a clash with fourth-placed Hawthorn.
