GEELONG’S decision to add Claudia Gunjaca to its AFLW list for the 2022 season has been further justified, with the acting captain claiming the club’s VFLW best-and-fairest.

Gunjaca, who the Cats signed as part of the AFL’s special assistant package for the club, polled 72 votes to win a tight count from midfielder Paige Sheppard on 70.

Annabel Johnson, who Geelong drafted with pick 15, finished a distant third on 37 votes.

AFLW Cat Becky Webster, who won the award in 2019, was fourth on 34.

Ruck Olivia Fuller, who, like Gunjaca, was a pre-draft signing, rounded out the top five on 32 votes.

Geelong won 10 of its 14 home-and-away games to finish second on the ladder.

The Cats lost their qualifying final to Collingwood before bouncing back to beat Southern Saints and Essendon to book a rematch with the Magpies in the grand final.

However, they were denied the chance at the club’s first piece of silverware in the women’s program by the ongoing COVID restrictions in Victoria, with the decider cancelled earlier this month.
