GEELONG Falcons have fought off a third-quarter challenge from the Greater Western Victoria Rebels to book a berth in their second NAB League Girls Grand Final.

The Falcons, who won the 2018 premiership when the competition was known as the TAC Cup, kicked the only two goals of the final term to claim a 14-point victory.

The win has booked them a meeting with the Oakleigh Chargers in next Sunday’s decider.

“They certainly came at us in that second half … and we withstood the pressure,” coach Paul Corrigan told Bay 93.9’s The Sideline View.

“I think it was a great preparation for us to go into next week.”

Renee Tierney, who is the sole surviving member of the 2018 team still with the Falcons kicked two goals, with midfield trio Tess Craven, Poppy Schaap and Charlotte Simpson again influential in the midfield.

Corrigan says he would allow the Falcons to savour the victory over the Rebels but was quick to remind them post-game they had a grand final to prepare for.

“I said what we’ve got to be able to do now is enjoy the win but not get carried away with it, and make sure we enjoy the week next week,” he said.

“But, also come ready to perform as well.

“There’s no use getting to a grand final and be happy with that.”

Corrigan is likely to have a dilemma at selection, with midfielder Ingrid Houtsma likely to return from a concussion.

The grand final is expected to be played at Werribee’s Avalon Airport Oval next Sunday, with the time to be confirmed.
