Joeys name team of greats

GEELONG school St Joseph’s College has marked hits 85th anniversary by naming a team featuring its greatest VFL/AFL exports

SJC alumni Cameron Ling, Bill McMaster, Brendan McCartney and Paul Hood had 56 players to select from in naming the Team of Champions.

McMaster, McCartney and Hood were unanimous in nominating Ling as captain, while Ling, Hood and McMaster all had McCartney as coach.

The team, which combines more 3600 games of experience and 17 premierships, features a Brownlow medallist (Jimmy Bartel), a Rising Star winner (Sam Walsh) and four club captains (Ling, Barry Stoneham Damian Bourke and Nick Maxwell).

There are also eight All-Australians.

“It is an important part of the history of the College and we appreciate Bill, Brendan, Cameron and Paul taking the time to select this team in the 85th year of the College,” principal Tony Paatsch said.

“With 14 past students currently playing at the highest level, we are sure some of them and some of our current students, will be in the team of 100 years at our centenary in 2035.”
