GFL reveals top six plans

AFL Barwon has cancelled the final round of the GFL season and introduced a top-six finals series as part of its plan to finish the season if community sport is given the green light to resume in the coming weeks.

The local governing body’s roadmap, which the AFL Barwon Commission formalised on Thursday night, is based on grand finals being held on Sunday, October 3 at the latest.

The top-six adopted by AFL Barwon will give first and second (St Mary’s and Colac) direct entry into a preliminary final in week two.

The Saints will play the winner of the semi-final between Bell Park and Geelong West, while the Tigers will face the victor from the match-up between South Barwon and St Joseph’s.

However, if restrictions aren’t lifted until September 25, St Mary’s and Colac will meet in a grand final on October 3.

The BFL will resume its finals series, with a second semi-final between Torquay and Modewarre and the Battle of the Bridge first semi between Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove.

Like the GFL, if restrictions aren’t eased until September 25, the Tigers and Warriors will battle in the decider on October 3.

“The AFL Barwon Commission has outlined it is our intention to ‘Play On’ if restrictions and protocols allow,” acting Region General Manager Sean Atkinson said.

“Whilst it would have been our preference to keep the traditional finals structure and for everyone to play each
other once in the Geelong Football Netball League, time is against us, and it isn’t possible to do so.”

“Moving to a final-six allows the Geelong Football Netball League to be played over three weeks and gives us the
best possible chance to complete the season.”

Support from the Geelong Cricket Association has opened the door for AFL Barwon to play into October for the first time.

“We really appreciated the support that has been provided to us by the Geelong Cricket Association by
allowing us to use the first weekend in October to give us a chance to finish our season,” Atkinson said.

“We are committed to trying to complete all of our competitions this season if restrictions allow us to do so.”
