A GOAL after the siren from the talented Flynn Young has given Grovedale consecutive wins for the first time this season and kept it in touch with the GFL top five.

Trailing by four points after Leopold goaled with just a minute remaining in the contest at Leopold Memorial Park, Young won a free kick for holding the ball against star Lion Logan Wagener 15m from goal just before the siren sounded.

“I was pretty happy it was in his hands,” coach Daniel Fraser said.

“He’s a pretty smooth user of the footy, and he was able to put it through the big sticks and give us the four points.”

It was appropriate that Young played the hero for the Tigers after producing his best display since the Geelong Falcons graduate arrived at Burdoo Reserve.

“He’s been pretty good all year for us, but I loved his game because when the heat was on late in the game, he stood up,” Fraser said.

“He’s played Falcons and underage footy, but to stand up in a GFL game when the heat’s on, the game’s on the line, and kick a crucial goal after the siren, I thought it was really good for him.

“Hopefully, Werribee (VFL) takes notice.”

Young finished with four goals, as did Jordan Erskine in the 33-year-old’s best performance since returning to the club last month.

“He’s come into our system a little bit later and off limited preparation, but he’s finding his feet now,” Fraser said.

“With the three talls up there (Erskine, Cam Delaney and Tom Gillett), it would always take a little time for that to gel.

“I think each week, he’s improved every time, and Saturday, he was able to get on the board.

Anglesea recruit Dale Kerr also impressed in a midfield role.

“He adds a bit of leadership and a bit of hardness around the contest,” Fraser said.

“And with such a young group, he’s invaluable; his leadership’s been fantastic around the footy club.

“He’s been a really good asset for us.”

Grovedale’s next challenge is a match-up against second-placed Newtown & Chilwell at Burdoo Reserve.
