GFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 3

INACCURATE DRAGONS GET PAST GIANTS

Bell Park has overcome inaccuracy in front of goal to open its 2021 account with a 22-point win over the much-improved Geelong West Giants. Despite being without VFL-listed trio Keegan Gray (Werribee), Aiden Domic (wrist) and Charlie Wilson (ankle), the Dragons were able to hold off the Giants at Hi Sushi Oval. “They’re probably three of our top 5-10 players, so we brought in some kids,” Jack said. “We had three under-19s (debutant Zac Mirkovic, Jack McMahon and Jack Hall), and we’ve got a heap of 19 and 20-year-olds. So it’s just pleasing for them to see the work they’ve done over pre-season starting to pay off. For them to play with our experienced senior players – we had the two Sheringhams come back yesterday – and they just add, not so much their football talent, but just the knowledge and to help out with the younger boys.”

KNEE UPDATE (1)

St Joseph’s veteran Kieren Paliouras could be headed for surgery on his torn anterior cruciate ligament after ruling himself out of Saturday’s win over Newtown & Chilwell. Paliouras, who suffered the injury early in 2020, went down in the first quarter of the Anzac Day clash with South Barwon. He came from the ground but returned to the field and kicked two goals. “It did buckle, in a movement you can’t control, and that’s probably got inside his head a fair bit this week, and it’s put a bit of doubt in his mind,” coach Paul Carson told K rock’s GFL Match of the Day coverage. “He hasn’t 100 per cent confirmed he’ll have surgery, but it is looking likely.”

KNEE UPDATE (2)

The return to football of Newtown & Chilwell star Alex Cincottta from a knee reconstruction has been delayed. Cincotta, who is splitting his time between the Eagles and Carlton’s VFL program, won’t be back in action until next month. “He’s travelling a bit slower than we would have liked,” Newtown & Chilwell coach Damien McMahon said. “It looks like he’ll make his comeback in June, so he’s still a few more weeks away from playing. (He’s) having a heavy training block with the Carlton side at the moment.”

POLD PAYS TRIBUTE TO PARKE

Leopold has used its first home match of the season to pay a poignant tribute to former player Hamish Parke. The Lions retired the two numbers he wore across his 220 games – 3 and 43 – for Saturday’s senior and reserves match-ups with Lara. Parke lost his battle with cancer at just 39 in February.
