The Wash-Up – GFL Round 15

WINNERS

SCOREBOARD – ROUND 15

DRAGONS CLAIM CRUCIAL WIN

Bell Park has replaced South Barwon in third spot and put itself in the box seat for the double-chance after coming from 14 points down in time-on to beat the Swans by five points. The win has the Dragons a game clear of South Barwon, St Joseph’s, Geelong West and Grovedale ahead of a crucial clash with Joeys in Round 16. “It was a really good contested game of footy,” Bell Park coach Shane Jack told The Wash-up podcast. “That rain came in half-way through the third quarter, which made it a bit scrappy in the end. To kick those last goals and get over the top is really important for our group.”

EAGLES HOPING FOR AN EXTRA WEEK

Newtown & Chilwell will be hoping speculation AFL Barwon is planning to end the GFL home-and-away season a week earlier than planned is off the mark. The Eagles remain a mathematical chance of playing finals after proving too good for Grovedale by 18 points at Elderslie Reserve. They are now six points outside the top five. “If there’s an opportunity to play three games, I’d like to think we might still be a sneaky chance,” coach Damien McMahon said. “Until it’s confirmed, it’s hard to give up on that.”

MILESTONE FOR SHEAHAN

Jai Sheahan’s first goal for Newtown & Chilwell was his 200th for the club. The versatile former Melbourne rookie finished with three majors for the day in the Eagles’ 18-point win over Grovedale at Elderslie Reserve, Sheahan, who won the Geelong Falcons best-and-fairest in 2011, now has 202 goals from 129 games in red and black.

O’GORMAN GETS THROUGH

Talented Colac youngster Frazer O’Gorman has made a successful return from a lengthy concussion-enforced layoff. He kicked three goals in the Tigers’ narrow reserve grade loss to Leopold at Memorial Park. The former Geelong Falcon, who spent last year with Centrals Districts in the SANFL, hadn’t played since May 1.
