The Wash-Up – GFL Round 1

WINNERS

SCOREBOARD – ROUND 1

A STAR IS BORN

Grovedale may have unearthed a key forward that could have a long and prosperous career at Burdoo Reserve. A product of the Tigers’ juniors, Tom Gillett kicked a team-high four goals as Daniel Fraser notched up a win in his first game in charge of the club. “I was just happy to get a touch, to be honest, this is a bit of a bonus,” Gillett said post-game.

WEST WITH AN EYE ON THE TIGERS

A 37-point win over Lara in the bank, Geelong West coach Greg Mellor is now looking forward to taking on Grovedale in Round 2. The Tigers are the talk of the GFL following an upset 30-point win over Bell Park. “We’ll definitely be having a look at it,” Mellor said when asked about watching vision of Grovedale’s victory. “Grovedale have been quite active with their recruiting. They’ve got a lot of young, exciting kids by the sounds of it. We can get to play in front of our new facility in a (GFL/GDFL) double-header at West next weekend, so we’re really excited about putting on a show and performing to the best of our ability.”

CAREER-HIGH FOR SWAN

James Syddall proved to be an unlikely match-winner in South Barwon’s 109-point win over North Shore with seven goals. In game number 78, it was easily a career-high for the Swan, with his previous best of four goals coming against St Albans in Round 9, 2016.

SUPERSAINTS BLUSHES SPARED

At three-quarter time, St Albans was headed for the ignominy of being held goalless by St Mary’s. However, recruits Ned Mullins and Steve Gunther ensured the Supersaints had a number in the goals column. It was St Albans lowest score since being held to 1.6 (12) by Colac in Round 16, 2018. That came just three weeks after the Supersaints went goalless against South Barwon when they kicked just six behinds for the afternoon.
