Veale still in doubt

QUESTION marks continue to surround the fitness of Colac great Lochie Veale after he missed the weekend win over St Joseph’s.

The 36-year-old suffered a quad injury during the second quarter of the opening round win over St Albans but failed to prove his fitness in time for the clash with Joeys.

Tigers coach Rowan McSparron says Veale is no certainty to take on Bell Park at Hi Sushi Oval this Saturday.

“We’ll just reassess him during the week,” McSparron said.

“Being a valuable member of the side, we want to make sure that he’s right.”

Colac enters the meeting with the Dragons with a full head of steam following its biggest-ever victory over Joeys.

However, McSparron was quick to acknowledge the injury issues suffered by the visitors on Saturday night.

“It obviously gives the group a lot of confidence going forward that we can match it with the better teams,” he said.

“But, in saying that, Joeys had no rotations after half-time, and were limited with some of the players they had available as well.

“So, we understand they weren’t at full strength.”

After committing more than 70 turnovers in its season-opener against St Albans, Colac’s retention of the Sherrin was far superior against St Joseph’s.

McSparron said their execution and decision-making were markedly improved.

“We all know we can kick the footy, but it’s more about picking the right option,” he said.

“With the conditions (against St Albans), it did make it a little bit scratchy.

“And being Round 1 and not playing for so long probably had a little bit of influence on it as well.”
