JASON Tom can start preparing for season 2022 with a greater degree of certainty after being re-appointed as coach of Leopold.

The former star forward, who played 163 games in the green and gold, has agreed to a new one-year deal in the past 24 hours.

“It’s good to lock it away,” Tom, who also played with Geelong Amateur and Bannockburn, said.

“There’s already planning and preparation that’s been going ahead on a long-term basis.

“To have that confidence we can keep plugging away with that whilst finishing off this year is a nice feeling.”

GFL: “LIKE A CAR CRASH”

After scoring just its second win of the season against Newtown & Chilwell on July 3, Tom will look to use the remainder of the season as a launchpad for his emerging youngsters.

Leopold fielded 12 players who had played 15 or fewer GFL senior games in the clash with the Eagles.

“There’s been a bit documented about our injury list,” Tom said. “But, what that’s enabled is blokes to get some senior footy under their belt.

“And once they start playing that five, ten, 15, 20 GFL senior games, that’s how they get better.

“They don’t get better from not playing or playing at a lower level.,

“We’re really confident we’re going to have some sharp improvement, and I think we’ve started to see that this year.”

GFL: GIANT’S TASTE OF COACHING

Tom Ruggles is a certain starter for Sunday’s clash with reigning premier St Mary’s. He’ll replace Brock Williamson, who will be sidelined following surgery on a dislocated thumb.

Youngster Michael Case is still a question mark after being concussed against Newtown & Chilwell.

However, Lucas Boyd (broken hand) and Sam Hughes (quad) are a chance to take on the Saints.

“We’re coming in off a pretty strong performance where I don’t think we had any passengers against Newtown,” Tom said.

“So, I don’t think we’re in a position where we’ll be going to be making wholesale changes to that team.

“We were really happy with how everyone performed on that day.”
