More thumb woes for Hansen

DARCY Hansen’s run of bad luck has continued with the South Barwon co-captain set for more surgery on a thumb injury that has derailed his 2021 campaign.

Hansen, who suffered a fractured thumb during a pre-season training session, appeared on track for his first senior game in more than two years after making consecutive reserve grade appearances against Newtown & Chilwell and St Mary’s.

“After his first game against Newtown, he felt something wasn’t quite right, and the advice he got was that everything was freeing up and he was going to get some discomfort,” Swans coach Dave Farrell said.

“Following the St Mary’s game, he went and got it checked, and it turns out following an MRI, there’s a split in the tendon, and he’ll need to have that repaired.”

Farrell says Hansen has been wearing a guard for the past week to ensure the tendon can’t snap completely.

South won’t have a timeline on his return until after the surgery, but the Swans are preparing to be without Hansen for the remainder of the season.

“We’re always bracing for that with Darce,” Farrell said.

“We joked about it a couple of times through pre-season that if we could get a couple of games out of him, it would be a positive.

“Maybe he’s destined not to get out there, but we certainly hold high hopes and know he’ll contribute.

“Whether it be onfield or off-field, he’ll play a massive part in our year.”

In better news for the Swans, star midfielder Ben Lusby and key defender Jack Driver should be right to return from injury if Saturday’s clash with Bell Park does go ahead.

Jonty Broughton is making solid progress from a severe hamstring injury suffered in the lead-up to Round 2 but remains a “week-to-week proposition”.

“He’s getting treatment a couple of times a week and got his own rehab program, so we’ll be guided by him,” Farrell said.

“He understands that it is going to be about what impact he can have on the side in the back half of the year, so he’s not in a rush.”
