GROVEDALE is “optimistic” star midfielder Nathan Deans will be right for Saturday’s mouth-watering match-up with fellow top-five contender South Barwon.

The 2016 Mathieson medallist was forced from Burdoo Reserve early in the weekend win over St Joseph’s with an ankle injury.

However, scans have come back clear, increasing Deans’ chance of taking on the Swans.

Despite Deans’ absence for most of the clash with Joeys, coach Daniel Fraser was impressed with how his midfield stood up.

“It’s always a bit of a shudder when a bloke like Nathan goes down through your group, and you know how durable he’s been through the years,” Fraser told K rock’s GFL Match of the Day coverage.

“We ended up pushing young Lachie Smith into the midfield. I thought he started a little bit slowly in there, and then he got a role in the second half, and I thought he grew.

“Will Jeffery’s been more of a run-with player, and we released him to go and find his own ball.

“And I thought Matt Harvey had another good game … and I actually thought Billy Ford stepped up there as well.”
