SOUTH Barwon has confirmed star midfielder Louis Herbert and captain Darcy Hansen won’t play again in 2019.

Herbert has undergone surgery on a heel injury suffered in an off-field accident, while Hansen had an ankle reconstruction earlier this week after managing just

“The need for surgery has compounded Louis’ situation and he won’t take any further part in this season,” coach David Farrell said of the former Gold Coast Sun.

“No doubt, once he gets past the initial disappointment, he can shift his focus to his rehab, and if he applies himself to that the way he did his footy this year, he will surpass expectations.”

Hansen has been restricted to just 12 games in two season after kicking 34 goals from 18 matches in 2017.

“I haven’t come across an any more selfless footballer,” Farrell said.  “It’s terribly disappointing with the work he puts in to only manage 12 games in two seasons.

“But what he continues to deliver off-field as our club captain still makes him as valuable each week as any player that runs out on the weekend.

“We knew very early on the surgeons needed to go in again and he was clearly not right and in a lot of pain for the first six weeks.

“We put it on him each week to push through and help us lay the foundations for the season. It was pretty heartbreaking as, despite his commitment, he was unable to impact the game the way he has shown he is capable of and no doubt can again.”

Herbert and Hansen join the luckless Will Sexton on the Swans’ long-term injury list.

Sexton is booked in for a reconstruction on the knee he injured against St Albans on June 22 next month.
