MATCH OF THE ROUND

What will Newtown & Chilwell’s response to just its second loss since Round 8 last year be when it travels down the Princes Highway for a battle with fellow premiership contenders Colac? The Eagles find themselves in a three-way battle for the minor premiership with the Tigers and St Joseph’s, which had the better of Damien McMahon’s men by 21 points at Elderslie Reserve. Nelson Browne returns from suspension for Newtown & Chilwell, while Werribee defender Dane McFarlane has been named in the Eagles’ squad. Veteran big man Lochie Veale and star midfielder Jonathan Simpkin are back for Colac.

SUPERSAINTS CHASE A SCALP

Fresh from his best-on-ground performance for Vic Country, Sam Michael will return to the St Albans line-up to battle Leopold duo Trent West and Jack Berry at The Gordon TAFE Oval. The Supersaints also welcome back Jack Hudson and Caleb Tiller as co-coach Chris Carlon hopes to put a dent in the Lions’ finals hopes. “We’ve talked about getting that scalp all the way through,” he said. “We’ve pushed all the top sides to a certain degree – St Joeys is the only one that got away from us. We’d like to get a scalp on the way home, just to prove it’s not a fluke we’re going the way we’re going, and we can build from that.” Leopold will also welcome back Marcus Thompson from Vic Country duty.

YOUNG GUNS CALL-UP FOR GFL TRIO

Newtown & Chilwell’s Alex Cincotta, Lara’s Darcy Bennett and Aiden Domic from Bell Park will have the chance to show their wares in front of AFL recruiters after being named in the third AFL Victoria Young Guns game. It will be played at Werribee’s Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday morning.

MILESTONES FOR JOEYS DUO

Co-captain Rhys Hultgren and young defender Ben McNamara will both reach milestones in Saturday’s clash with Bell Park at Drew Oval. Hultgren, who made his return from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament earlier, will play game 150. The forward is a two-time premiership player after making his senior debut in the opening round clash with Lara in 2011. He kicked two goals as Joeys held off the Cats by 31 points at Bisinella Oval under the coaching of Russell Robertson. McNamara, a Torquay junior, arrived at St Joseph’s in 2017 following his final year at the Geelong Falcons and will play his 50th game in the red, gold and black. 46 of those have been at senior level, including the 2017 and 2018 premierships.
