First-timers among GFL’s best

NAMES that should become household in the GFL over the next decade are among 13 first-timers selected in the 2021 GFL Coaches’ Team of the Year.

In a changing of the guard, Rookie of the Year Tom Gillett, K rock MVP Harry Benson and fellow St Mary’s young guns Josh Jaska and Jack Blood, and Geelong West ball-magnet David Handley are among the under-23 talent named.

Also in the first-time category are Bell Park’s Ben Lloyd, South Barwon’s Jack Driver and Colac’s Liam McCarthy.

Lara duo Dan Weigl and Mitch Day marked successful returns to the Snakepit with selection, while Dragon defender Steve Benstead, Colac star Jonathan Simpkin, and St Joseph’s gun Jordan Keras were also among the experienced group earning their first Team of the Year nod.

Leopold ruckman Trent West and St Joseph’s forward Cam Tudor were selected for the third time.

Bell Park’s Lachie Patten, who is among seven players returning from the 2019 Team of the Year, was named captain.

After guiding St Mary’s to the minor premiership, Glenn Keast and Travis Robertson were named as co-coaches of the team.

Colac had the most representatives from the one club with five, with St Mary’s and Bell Park next best with three.

Ten clubs had a player selected, with only Newtown & Chilwell and St Albans missing out.
