GEELONG Falcons coach Paul Corrigan has confirmed he is across the feats of emerging Grovedale teenager Tom Gillett.

The 17-year-old power forward been one of the talking points of the GFL in the opening month of the season after jumping to the top of the league goalkicking table.

Gillett has 22 goals to his name, including consecutive seven-goal hauls against Leopold and North Shore in the past fortnight.

“He’s been going alright, hasn’t he?” Corrigan said. “I’ve been keeping an eye on him and how he’s been going.

“If he wants to be part of the program, we’ll happily have him, no worries at all. We’ll source out and see where he’s at and see what the go is.

“At the moment, he’s doing some really good stuff at Grovey, and we’ll just let him be.

“If he keeps going the way he’s going, he’ll probably attract a fair bit of interest.”

Corrigan was quick to dismiss any concerns about a player being behind the eight-ball by joining a program after not being part of the Falcons pre-season.

“I don’t see it like that,” he said.

“‘Domsy’ (talent manager Tom Lonergan) and I have been pretty agile with our thinking coming into the program that if there’s talent out there that weren’t originally within our list that we brought back, we’re more than happy to look at potential players that can fit the system, and we think have got that potential.

“We’re an open book. If there’s talent there that wants to be part of our program, we’ll happily bring that in.

“Then it becomes up to the individual. If they want to be part of it, we’ll open our arms and help them as much as we can.

Grovedale coach Daniel Fraser says the Tigers would be supportive if Gillett wanted to that explore that avenue.

“He’s kept his feet on the ground, and he continues to work really hard,” Fraser said.

“The thing that’s really pleasing for us as a coaching group is that he’s getting reward for effort.

“He’s an exciting young talent, and we certainly enjoy coaching Tom, and we enjoy having him in the group.

“He’s got some really good challenges coming up, and we’re looking forward to seeing how he handles them.”
