NEWTOWN &  Chilwell has beaten out a handful of other GFL clubs for the signature for Barwon Heads young gun Zach Walter.

Best-on-ground in the Seagulls’ drought-breaking Bellarine grand final win over Torquay, Walter was on the radar of several teams after his 33-possession performance against the Tigers.

That further intensified when the 21-year-old earned an invite to train with Geelong’s VFL squad before Christmas.

However, it was the Eagles who secured the services of Walter on Monday.

“It’s been a challenge to get him across the line,” coach Damien McMahon told krockfootball.com.au.

“He had a lot to weigh-up … leaving his club of origin in Barwon Heads after playing in a flag is no easy feat.

“We always knew it was going to be tough for him to make that decision to leave Barwon Heads to come to a GFL club in his quest to play VFL football.

“We’re super excited to get him. We’ve got a great history with some of the best players in the Bellarine coming into the GFL, and no greater example of that than Blake Sutterby winning our best-and-fairest in his first year.

“Not putting too much pressure on Zac, but we have high hopes he comes in and becomes a regular senior footballer.”

McMahon expects Walter, who spent two seasons and played six games with the Geelong Falcons across 2016-17, will start life as a defender.

“We see him playing as a running half-back; we think that’s where he’s best suited,” McMahon said.

“He might develop up the ground a little bit further as the season progresses.

“But, I’d say half-back/wing would be his two most preferred positions.”

The addition of Walter is the second handy signing at Elderslie Reserve in the New Year, with Tyler Spence becoming the latest arrival at Newtown & Chilwell from Ovens and Murray club Corowa-Rutherglen.

The Eagles, who were knocked out of last year’s finals in straight sets, open their 2020 campaign with the Pride Cup clash against Leopold on Sunday, April 6 at Memorial Park.
