Brauer boost for Tigers

GROVEDALE has struck the first recruiting blow of the GFL off-season with the signing of Geelong Falcons vice-captain Charlie Brauer.

Brauer, the youngest member of Barwon Heads’ drought-breaking BFL premiership in 2019, is on the comeback trail from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament that suffered playing with the Falcons in April.

Coach Daniel Fraser says a connection with several Tigers young guns helped lure Brauer, who is likely to be on the Geelong VFL list again next year, to Burdoo Reserve.

“We’ve got quite a few boys down at the Falcons at the moment, and there’s a bit of a link through those guys,” Fraser said. “And he was a Grovedale College student.

“That was the link for us, so we were able to follow it up, and we spoke to him during lockdown over the phone and said we’d catch up with him in person as soon as restrictions allowed.

“We were able to do that 2-3 weeks ago to get a signature from him.

“We’re very, very happy to have Charlie on board, and we think he’ll add to our group immensely.”

Fraser says Brauer, who turns 19 next month, is confident of being right for the start of the 2022 GFL season, which appears likely to be in early April, with Easter falling in the middle of the month.

“We’re not going to rush him, but my understanding from Charlie at the moment is he’s on track, and we’re hoping he’ll start Round 1,” Fraser said.

“But, we’ll do the right thing by Charlie. If it’s a little bit later, we’re prepared to wait a little bit longer to make sure he’s right.”

Brauer can play both in defence and up forward, but Fraser says he’s keen to spend some time in the midfield.

“That’s something we’ll certainly look at with him,” Fraser said. “At this stage, he’ll play as a forward or a defender.

“But, we’ll have a chat to the VFL club and see where they see him playing, and we’ll see if we can help him out in that area as well.”
