The Wash-Up – GDFL Round 8

WINNERS

SCOREBOARD – ROUND 8

BIG DAY FOR HAWKS

Inverleigh’s only win at Victoria Park wasn’t the four points it received for seeing off archrival Bannockburn by 40 points to maintain its unbeaten start to the season. In the reserve grade clash, Toby Manganelli and Dean Muir both featured among the best players in the Hawks’ reserve grade win over the Tigers. Manganelli was making his comeback from a serious thumb injury suffered in Round 2. While Muir was playing his first game for Inverleigh since 2018. Both loom as handy additions for the Hawks in the second half of the season.

BLUES ON THE BOARD

With half of this shortened season in the books, Brendan Forssman knows Winchelsea won’t be featuring in the GDFL finals. However, Forssman hopes the Blues, who claimed their first win of a tough campaign against Corio on Saturday, can play “spoiler” to other clubs’ chances in the run to the finals, starting with Geelong West next week. “These are the teams that we’ll hope to have a real good crack at, and try and spoil their finals ambitions, as we’ve had done to us in the last couple of years,” Forssman told The Wash-up podcast. “So, there’s still plenty for us to play for in the back half of the year, for sure.”

FREEMAN MAKES A PROMISING RETURN

Exciting Thomson forward Daniel Freeman has made an immediate impact in his first senior game in more than two years. Freeman, who suffered a ruptured Achilles in Round 7, 2019, kicked four goals as the Tigers held off the Belmont Lions by 13 points. The former Ocean Grove star had spent four weeks in Thomson’s reserve grade side before earning a recall.

HOLWELL HAVING A KICK

In our GDFL Spotlight column on Saturday, we reported that former Thomson star Luke Forbes had lodged a clearance to Newstead in the Maryborough Castlemaine District League. Well, he wasn’t the only former Tigers star to head to Central Victoria for a kick, with premiership coach and 2019 Whitley medallist Reece Holwell joining Forbes. For the record, Newstead ran out 52 point winners over Navarre, while Forbes was taken to hospital after a hard landing following a marking attempt.
