The Wash-Up – GDFL Round 4

WINNERS

SCOREBOARD – ROUND 4

BANNO STAYS UNBEATEN

Bannockburn has spoiled Werribee Centrals’ weekend celebration of its 2000 and 2001 premierships by ending the Centurions unbeaten start to the 2021 season with a 32-point win. Tigers coach Peter Riccardi says making a quick start and silencing the crowd was a focus leading into the clash at Galvin Park. “They (the crowd) would have been in good voice if we’d let them off to a quick start,” he said. Riccardi was full of praise for ruckman Ben Cole’s efforts. “He’s not overly big, but geez he gives us some grunt in the middle of the ground,” he said. “As a ruckman, he’s giving away size and weight, but (he) just goes about his business. And the boys at ground level were pretty good as well winning the clearances.

THOMSON SQUARES THE LEDGER

Following disappointing performances against Inverleigh and Bannockburn in the previous fortnight, Thomson narrowly avoided three-straight losses with a five-point win over a fast-finishing North Geelong at Keith Barclay Oval. “It was a really, really good contest,” Tigers co-coach Sam Jacka said. “We were pretty happy just to come away with the win. It was a hot footy, and North Geelong, to their credit, played extremely well in that second half.”

BATTAGLIA BACK IN A MONTH

Bannockburn star Tristan Battaglia is closing in on his first game for the club since returning from St Albans at the end of 2019. Battaglia damaged his thumb in a workplace accident should be back before the Queen’s Birthday mid-season break next month. “It’s always been Round 8,” coach Peter Riccardi said. “He saw the doc(tor) on Friday and it’s still heading on that path. He’s been cleared to run around and do all that kind of stuff. He can’t really touch the footies at the minute. But he’s following a couple of our senior players around just in some running patterns.”

CAREER-HIGH FOR PANTHER

Luke Mann’s seven goals was a highlight as Bell Post Hill made light work of Anakie to the tune of 159 points at Anake Reserve. It was a career-high for Mann, who was playing his 26th game at senior level for the Panthers. His previous best was five goals on two occasions in 2019. Bell Post Hill picked up a very handy 61 per cent from the victory to see them climb from eighth to fifth after four rounds.

BENNETT A DAD

Corio co-coach Joel Bennett might be sidelined with a shoulder injury and his beloved Devils winless through the opening four rounds, but you can’t wipe the smile off his face following the birth of his first child on Saturday night. Bennett’s partner Tiffany delivered a baby boy named Flynn Peter, weighing in at 7lb 3oz (3.33kgs) and 50cm long. Both Mum and Flynn are doing well, while Dad’s “over the moon”.
