The Wash-Up – GDFL Round 2

WINNERS

SCOREBOARD – ROUND 2

BLAIR’S GIANT PERFORMANCE

Alex Blair’s love affair with the Belmont Lions continued as Geelong West stormed to a 97-point win at Winter Reserve. For the second time in as many meetings with the Lions, Blair slotted eight goals, to spearhead the Giants to victory. “He had a great day,” coach Mitch Wight said. “But, to be honest, I think the work was done up the ground to really give him those opportunities one-on-one down deep. He did have a really great day. But the midfielders and half-forwards did a great job of keeping the forward 50 open for him.”

SOLID START FOR THE CENTURIONS

For the first time since 2014, Werribee Centrals have started the season with consecutive wins. After holding off Geelong West by 11 points last week, the Centurions made light work of Anakie in Round 2 to the tune of 87 points. Centrals will be confident of making it three-straight victories to start the season when it travels to winless Winchelsea in Round 3. The last time the Centurions achieved that feat was the year of its most recent grand final appearance in 2010. Centrals strung together 10-consecutive wins to start that season.

BLUES BLOWN OUT OF THE WATER

Winchelsea went to Keith Barclay Oval hoping to avoid a 0-2 start to the season. However, they copped North Geelong in full-flight. At 115 points, the loss was the Blues’ second-biggest under Brendan Forssman. However, it was well short of the 167-point hiding they copped from Bell Post Hill in Round 4, 2017. It doesn’t get any easier for Winchelsea in Round 3, with the unbeaten Werribee Centrals paying a visit next Saturday night.
