PANTHERS POUNCE ON DOUBLE-CHANCE

Bell Post Hill’s return from a rare finals’ absence looks set to begin in a qualifying final following Saturday’s 36-point win over Geelong West at Myers Reserve. Extending a hold over the Giants at home spanning more than 20 years, the Panthers are half-a-game behind Bannockburn and percentage clear of Werribee Centrals with two rounds to play. With Bell Post Hill playing lowly winless Anakie and unbeaten Winchelsea, and the Tigers and Centurions to do battle to round out the home-and-away season, Justin Tarr’s men are certainties to claim the double-chance. “It’s a massive result,” Tarr told The Wash-up podcast. “We’re in the top-three now, and if we can get job done in the next two games, then we lock in that top-three spot, which was our goal at the start of the year. It did take us a while to get over the top of Geelong West. It was a bit of a funny game. It was a really flat feeling – nobody was there, and it had a bit of a practice match feel to it, which is funny to say with so much on the line for both sides.”

DEVILS KEEP EAGLES HONEST

The final margin might have been 63 points, but once again for Corio, the score difference wasn’t a true reflection of the Devils’ effort. They were within a goal early in the last quarter before East Geelong kicked into gear and ran away with a 63-point win at VIVA Energy Oval that has the Eagles still in the mix for the double-chance. Corio’s performance prompted former Devils star and local great Ricky O’Toole to take to social media. “In good hands, on the right track, with some great kids,” he wrote on Twitter.
