THE GDFL season will be called off if Werribee Centrals are unable to participate in a delayed finals series if a divide in COVID-19 restrictions between regional and metro Victoria returns.

Club delegates met on Thursday night to discuss a range of options proposed by the league’s executive as revealed by krockfootball.com.au on Wednesday.

The decision represents a change of thinking from rival clubs, who earlier this month voted to proceed with finals without the Centurions.

In a statement released following the meeting, the GDFL confirmed the latest it would re-start the season is September 18.

It would then play a two-week, top-four finals series, with the grand final being played on the AFL Grand Final public holiday on Friday, September 24.

As part of the option adopted, fifth-placed East Geelong will find itself on the outside looking in.

Centrals, who finished fourth, will meet minor premier Inverleigh, while Bannockburn and Bell Post Hill will do battle in the second versus third match-up.

“After some robust discussion, it was agreed that player welfare, safety, and the need to complete the GDFNL 2021 Finals Series as soon as possible was of most importance when considering what was (the) best action to be taken,” president Neville Whitley said.

“Clubs competing (in) the Finals Series, although agreeing with the player welfare aspects etc, indicated that they were still keen to play in a final series in some format.

“League and Clubs all agreed the likelihood of the restrictions being lifted on the Thursday 2 September 2021 being very remote and it was further agreed that Option 3 of the proposal be implemented.”
