Season over for GDFL

THE extension of the COVID-19 lockdown in metropolitan Melbourne until at least September 23 has left the GDFL with no option but to cancel its season.

After clubs agreed to last week’s recommendation to bring the season to an end if restrictions were extended past September 9, excluding Werribee Centrals from playing, the cancellation was confirmed at a meeting of the league executive on Wednesday night.

“This is unfortunate, but this now removes the uncertainty we have been experiencing over the last months and the impact it has been (having) on the players,” GDFL president Neville Whitley said in a statement on Facebook.
“Further information regarding Senior Football and Netball Vote Counts and Presentation Nights, as well as Junior Netball Presentation Night”, which will be held, will be communicated at a later date.”
As previously reported, minor premiers in each football and netball grade will be recognised.
