IT is only mid-September, but East Geelong may already have laid claim on the mantle of landing the GDFL’s best recruit following the signing of former Geelong VFL star Tom Maas.

A three-time premiership player with GFL club South Barwon, Maas has been with Eastern League powerhouse Vermont since 2018, playing in in flags in 2018-19.

At Richmond Crescent, Mass, a GFL and EFL interleague representative, will link up with brother Alistair and coach Ben Boseley, a long-term family friend.

“He’s been in my ear for a couple of years, and Ali’s been in my ear, so it’s nice to come back and play some footy with family and friends back in Geelong,” Maas said.

“At the end of October, me and my wife are moving back home, so that’s going to be nice.

“It’s been a tough 18 months.”

Maas, who turns 31 in late December, is well aware of how East Geelong continued its improvement from 2019 this year.

Boseley, who replaced Jeremy Power in mid-2020, would have taken the Eagles back to the finals if not for COVID-19.

East posted an 8-4 record, with its four losses at an average of under 10 points per game.

“Talking to Ali, they only lost to the top teams by a couple of kicks, and they were right in it by the sounds of things.

“I’m hoping I can come in and add to what they’ve already got and go deep into September.”

Boseley has labelled the recruitment of Maas as “pretty significant” for East Geelong.

“When I took over the coaching role, he was one of the first guys I called,” he said. “Knowing Alistair was at the club, it made sense to give the brother a call.

“But, at that point, Tom wasn’t quite ready to play in Geelong again with work in Melbourne and playing football at a pretty good level and was pretty happy with his football club.

“We started a conversation a couple of weeks back, and Tom decided the time was right for him and his family to come back to Geelong and play some local footy.”
