Buck leads GDFL’s best

ADAM Donohue’s efforts to turn Inverleigh from beaten semi-finalist to undefeated minor premier have resulted in being named coach of the GDFL Team for the Year.

The Hawks were raging favourites to win their first senior premiership since 1992 before COVID-19 called a halt to the season.

Inverleigh finished 10 points clear of second-placed Bannockburn, winning their 12 matches by an average of 84 points.

Donohue, who finished as leading goalkicker with 54 majors and tied for third in the Whitley Medal, was one of five Hawks named in the Team of the Year.

He was selected on a half-forward flank, as he was in 2019 when he was named captain, with teammates Dalton Grundell and Casey Meehan occupying centre half-forward and the other half-forward flank, respectively.

Corio co-coach Joel Bennett was given the captaincy honour.

Along with Donohue, Meehan, Whitley medallist Jack Brauman, Geelong West’s Michael Leamer, Belmont Lions’ Brent Jacques, and Beau McNamara from Bell Post Hill all returned from the 2019 team.

Ten clubs were represented in the team, with Anakie and Thomson the only clubs to miss out.
