No rush to replace Ricco – Banno

BANNOCKBURN won’t rush to replace outgoing senior coach Peter Riccardi.

As krockfootball.com.au revealed last month, the Geelong great will step down whenever the Tigers’ season concludes, having been in the role since 2016.

Football boss Zach Hickleton says with 90 per cent of this year’s list re-signed for 2022, there is not as much pressure to find replacements for Riccardi and assistant coach Darren Milburn.

“We’ve been blessed to have a couple of AFL legends coaching the side for six years and being so successful,” Hickleton said.

“They’re leaving it (the club) in a really good spot, so we’ve just got make sure we take our time and do it right and get the right person.”

Having had the stability of Riccardi and Milburn, Hickleton says Bannockburn is keen to appoint a coach willing to invest into the club as more than just the senior coach.

“It’s a big family club, so we want the person coming in to be a part of that and bring their family, and hopefully stay long-term,” he said.

“We were blessed to have two coaches do such a good job for such a long time, and it’s hard to find that.

“If we can get someone in similar to stick around for the long haul, hopefully, it’s a long haul of success with what we’ve got.

“It’s really important we get someone who wants to commit for some time.”

Hickleton is confident the job will be highly sought after, based on recent success, the demographic of the list, and a burgeoning junior base.

“The core group of young blokes are really committed,” he said.

“Even the last month”, where we haven’t been able to do too much, there’s been a lot of posting on the Facebook group about doing runs and going for a kick.

“There’s a really good group that’s already playing senior footy, but our under-19 team had 29 players this year and 28 of them going into the senior age group in 2022.

“You’ve 28 recruits, in a sense, if you can hold on to all those players, and there are some really good footballers in that side.

“We finished second in the under-19s in Division 2, so there is some talent coming through.”
