WINNERS

SCOREBOARD – ROUND 12

AMMOS STAY ALIVE

A win over Queenscliff and other results going its way has left the finals door slightly ajar for Geelong Amateur. A third win of the season snapped a rare five-game losing streak for Ammos, who are now two games and 15 per cent behind fifth-placed Ocean Grove. “We’re at that stage of the season where we need everything to go our way to be any chance of playing finals footy,” coach Kane Tenace told The Wash-up podcast. “But, for us, we’ve just got to control what we can control, and try and win some games.”

BROWN HELPS HEADS MAINTAIN HOLD ON HAWKS

A Nathan Brown-inspired Barwon Heads has overcome a 29-point half-time deficit to beat Drysdale by seven points at Mortimer Oval. The Collingwood premiership defender kicked seven goals as the reigning premier booted eight majors to three after the main break to continue its recent dominance of the Hawks. The Seagulls have won 11 of the past 13 meetings between the two clubs dating back to the final round of 2014. Drysdale will likely need to win four of its last six games, starting with Queenscliff next week,  if it’s to end an eight-year finals drought.

TIGERS MAINTAIN UNBEATEN RUN

If history is any guide, Torquay fans should clear their calendar for BFL grand final day. Saturday’s thumping win over Ocean Grove gave the Tigers a 9-0 start to a season for the fifth time since the competition started in 1971. In each of those years – 1982, 1986, 1998 and 2015 – Torquay at least made it to the final match of the season. Premierships resulted in 1986 and 1998, with ’86 a championship year as a star-studded Tigers made a mess of the competition with an average winning margin of 125 points in the 18 home-and-away games. They then smoked Drysdale by 117 points in the second semi-final and Newcomb by a still-record 159 points in the decider.
