Use the bye weekend – Nigro

PAUL Nigro has urged AFL Barwon to consider using next month’s bye weekend to catch up on matches missed due to the COVID-19-related pause to the season.

Three weekends of action have now been lost, with a call made by the local governing body on Thursday morning for senior football and netball in the Bellarine and Geelong leagues to remain on hold.

And the Anglesea mentor has the support of a majority of his BFL and GFL counterparts.

14 of the 21 coaches that responded to a krockfootball.com.au poll have supported playing on July 3.

“That, to me, would be a logical decision,” Nigro said. “Make Queen’s Birthday the bye weekend and fill that other weekend, so we effectively only miss two games.

“Once you start getting into missing three or four games, the inequities in the fixture become very hard to manage.

“From Anglesea’s point of view, we’re keen to play on that bye weekend.

“The argument of “people have got holidays booked or weekends planned”, the reality is you can’t go very far anyway.”

The third-placed Roos trained Thursday night and are likely to hit the track across the weekend, with Nigro planning for a return to play next Saturday with a clash against second-placed Modewarre.

“We’ll get as many sessions as we can in, and what we need to tick off, with anticipation of playing next weekend,” he said.
