Tigers look to bounce back

TORQUAY coach Dom Gleeson is well aware of the significance of Sunday’s clash with Modewarre at Community Bank Oval.

The Tigers, who sat atop the BFL ladder heading into last week’s loss to Geelong Amateur, could find itself falling to fifth if it can’t topple the reigning premier and Drysdale, Anglesea and Barwon Heads all win on Saturday,

“We do know how important this game is,” Gleeson said.

“But, in saying that, we go into every game treating them as important, particularly after the year we had last year.

“We prepare for each game to put our best foot forward.

“I know as cliched as that is, it just has to be the way; you can’t underestimate teams in the comp anymore.”

Torquay has suffered a blow at selection, with star forward Paul McMahon (hamstring) and veteran Sam Wormald (neck) to miss the meeting with Modewarre.

They will join Billy Henderson on the sidelines, who has been suffering from a combination of back and groin issues.

“He had scans last week, and it was all clear,” Gleeson said.

“I think he’s got a plan in place with the physio and he shouldn’t be too far off, but he certainly won’t be playing this week.”

BFL: SATURDAY SPOTLIGHT – ROUND 12

In better news for the Tigers, Tim Carty, Jack Heathcote and Josh Chapman will return after missing the defeat by Ammos.

And former Williamstown star Cam Lockwood is closing in on a return after suffering a severe hamstring injury in the clash with Anglesea on April 27.

Lockwood debuted for Torquay in the 35-point loss to Modewarre on Good Friday, a performance Gleeson said gave the Tigers’ confidence despite coughing up a 14-point three-quarter time lead.

“We went back to our processes, and we knew pretty quickly why we lost,” he said.

“They outworked us, out grunted us, and we just went away from our process.

“That’s what can happen when you’ve got seven new recruits coming into your team, whether they be your colts, or Ballarat players, or whatever.

“Now, we’ve got full confidence in the position the players are playing and the roles that they are playing.”
