Saturday Spotlight – BFL Round 8

THE GAMES

Saturday, May 22

  • Barwon Heads vs. Modewarre @ Howard Harmer Oval, 2:10pm
  • Geelong Amateur vs. Ocean Grove @ KFC Oval – Queen’s Park, 2:10pm
  • Torquay vs. Anglesea @ McCartney Oval, 2:10pm
  • Drysdale vs. Newcomb @ Mortimer Oval, 2:10pm
  • Queenscliff vs. Portarlington @ Queenscliff Recreation Reserve, 2:10pm

MATCH OF THE ROUND

It would be a travesty to go past the Great Ocean Road Cup clash between the unbeaten Torquay and second-placed Anglesea, which is riding a five-match winning streak. The Tigers average winning margin through the opening seven rounds is 71 points, but we expect the clash with the Roos to be a lot closer. If Anglesea can win plenty of clean footy from the middle and give Jordan Erskine plenty of opportunities in front of goal, then it will give themselves a chance of an upset.

MILESTONE FOR SCOTT

Drysdale star Mitch Scott will run out at open-age level for the 200th time in Saturday’s clash with Newcomb at Mortimer Oval. Scott, who was a key member of the Hawks’ consecutive premierships in 2009-10, has played 192 of his previous 199 games at senior level. All going to plan, the 33-year-old and legendary dad Greg, will become the first father-son combination to play 200 senior BFL games in Round 15.

CONCUSSION SIDELINES WAGENER

Newcomb will be without captain Logan Wagener for the must-win clash with Drysdale as a result of the new concussion protocol. The Power also look set to be without star forward duo Andrew Steele and Joel Geue as it looks for consecutive wins for the first time this year.
