MATCH OF THE ROUND

When four of the top five are in action against each other, it’s hard to make a call on the best match of the day. However, after they threw up a cracker in Round 8, it’s hard to look past Modewarre and Barwon Heads at Community Bank Oval. On that day, the Warriors held off the fast-finishing Seagulls for a five-point win at Howard Harmer Oval. If Torquay beats Anglesea, the winner will be a game clear of fourth spot with four rounds to play. Who will get the first crack at Nathan Brown? The former Collingwood and St Kilda defender has kicked 24 goals in his last four appearances.

HANDY RETURN FOR TORQUAY

Torquay has welcomed back forward Jack Heathcote to McCartney Oval. However, Tigers coach Dom Gleeson sys Heathcote, who kicked 41 goals in 2019, is no certainty to line up in the senior team as Torquay pushes towards its first flag since 2017. “I’ll never put a line through Jack, (but) he hasn’t played a lot of footy in two years,” Gleeson said. “He came to training for the first time on Tuesday night. We’re pumped to have him back, but I can’t see him playing senior footy this year just because he hasn’t had a load of work in. But, never say never. He’ll play twos in the next couple of weeks and, hopefully, apply himself there. He just wanted to come home and train with us and enjoy it again.”

ANOTHER COUTA DEBUTANT

It’s not quite Mark Waugh replacing brother Steve in the Australian Test cricket team in 1991, but a hip flexor injury to Ned Stephens has opened the door for brother Nat to make his debut for the Coutas. Stephens, who is still eligible for under-17 action (he turns 17 next week), will become the 12th Queenscliff junior given a taste of BFL senior action this year when the Coutas travel to Portarlington.

NEWCOMB TO MARK NAIDOC WEEK

Newcomb will wear its Indigenous jumper in Saturday’s must-win clash with Drysdale at Newcomb Sand & Soil Oval to mark NAIDOC Week. The jumper has been designed by David Flagg, who also designed the Geelong Supercats singlet worn on Friday night.

A SEAGULLS LUNCH

Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Danny O’Brien will be the star attraction at a fundraising lunch for Barwon Heads later this month. O’Brien, who prepared 2019 winner Vow and Declare, will be joined by former St Kilda star and GFL Mathieson medallist Tony Brown, and AFL Barwon’s Georgia Hillman at the function on July 23.
