Injury issues for Power

INJURY will see Newcomb without a key quartet of players for Saturday’s must-win clash with Queenscliff.

Playing coach Jye Walker, creative forward Joel Geue, league-leading goal kicker Andrew Steele, and key defender Adam Stirling are all sidelined after suffering injuries in last week’s loss to Ocean Grove.

Walker and Geue will miss up to a fortnight with hamstring issues, and Stirling is also set to miss two weeks after suffering a gash to the head.

However, it’s a knee injury suffered by Steele that’s of most concern, with scans to determine the extent of the damage.

“He had a little bit of bone bruising a couple of weeks ago, and it got compounded on the weekend; he got a couple of big knocks on it,” Walker said.

“He went and saw the physio and he told him to get some scans done.

“He played through it thinking he’d be right, but when he hurt it again it progressively got worse, and the pain and swelling haven’t gone away.”

Steve Scolaro, who has had a stop-start beginning to the season due to unavailability, is a definite inclusion.

However, selection last night was set to determine who would join him.

“Pete Gordyn will come back if his shoulder’s right,” Walker said.

“Then there’s a host of others who are in the mix to come back, like Will Farrow, who missed last week.

“J.P Dumont and Mikali Harrison and a few others who haven’t had a chance to get a crack will be in the mix.

“We’ve got a few decisions to make.”

For Walker, who was planning to rest either last week or this week, it will be a chance to coach from the boundary

“I get to see it from the sidelines with a different point-of-view,” he said.

“Me and Dave (McKiernan) can work together, and we can be out there watching and seeing how things are progressing.”
