IT has taken to the closing stages of the AFL Trade Period, but Geelong has got its man with GWS Giants spearhead Jeremy Cameron joining the club.

The Cats have given up their three first-round draft picks 13, 15 and 20 and future fourth-round pick for the 27-year-old, who will partner with veteran Tom Hawkins for at least two years.

They will receive a future second-round pick from GWS and one from Essendon after the Giants did a deal that sent Jye Caldwell to the Bombers.

As a result, at this stage, Geelong’s opening selection in next month’s National Draft is pick No.51.

“It is rare that a player of Jeremy’s talent becomes available and we are thrilled that he will be playing for us for the rest of his career,” Geelong’s recruiting and list manager Stephen Wells said.

“Jeremy and his management have been nothing but professional throughout this period. Jeremy had a number of options through this period and in deciding that Geelong was the best club for his future and we could facilitate a trade for him is a great outcome for both parties.

“Our players are excited to add Jeremy to our team. We believe we have strengthened our list through the free agent and draft period.

“There were a number of possible deals discussed today and we believe this one was the best for our club to secure Jeremy and strengthen our draft position in 2021.”

An underage selection by the Giants in 2010 from Dartmoor in south-west Victoria and TAC Cup club North Ballarat, Cameron played 171 games and kicked 427 goals in orange.

The 2019 Coleman medallist and two-time All-Australia, he is the only man to win the leading goalkicker award at GWS, claiming it on nine consecutive occasions.

Cameron, who will sign a five-year deal, joins North Melbourne veteran Shaun Higgins and Hawthorn premiership speedster Isaac Smith in joining the Cats since last month’s grand final loss.
