Timely returns for Cats

AFLW signings Erin Hoare and Anna Teague will both make timely returns to the Geelong team for Saturday’s blockbuster VFL Women’s clash with reigning premier Darebin Falcons.

The Cats are one of three unbeaten teams after the opening five rounds, while Darebin, which is set to feature former Cat Lily Mithen, sits fifth with three wins and a loss.

Ruck Hoare and key defender Teague have both had time off following the 2018 AFLW season at Melbourne but are ready to go after returning from overseas in recent weeks.

Teague loom as a likely match-up for transgender Darebin forward Hannah Mouncey.

“It’s terrific to have those two players back in the program,” coach Paul Hood said.

“Their experiences at AFLW level will no doubt support the rest of the group as we develop.

“It’s a huge test against Darebin. They’ve been the yardstick for a long, long time now.

“Even though they’ve had some turnover in their group, they still play with a really good style and their well-drilled, so we’re looking forward to testing themselves against them.”

The middle period of the season is stop-start for Geelong.

After a league-wide break for the Queen’s Birthday weekend, the Cats will have another bye in Round 7.

However, Hood is confident it won’t his team’s momentum.

“We had byes last year – I think there were three byes in the competition, and it’s something we’ve seen at VFL Men’s level over the years as well.

“So we just take the opportunity to freshen up and give your players a break.

“In this particular game, there might be a couple of players who miss out because the three-week break would be good for them to recover from injuries.

“We’ll see how all of that goes when we play the Western Bulldogs in a few weeks time.”

Among those missing the clash with the Falcons are goal kicker Kate Darby (finger) and vice-captain Renee Garing (managed).

Former Geelong Falcon Ruby Benham will make her debut as the Cats 23rd player.
