Rocky ready to lead

ROCKY Cranston has put her hand up for a spot in Geelong’s leadership group as the Cats officially commenced preparations for their inaugural AFL Women’s season.

The 29-year-old former Melbourne midfielder, who joined her teammates on a rain-soaked Deakin University on Tuesday night, is looking forward to help guide Geelong’s young talent.

But this year’s Geelong VFL Women’s best-and-fairest and VFLW Team of the Year member has stopped short of declaring her interest in the captaincy.

“I would love to be in the leadership team. I don’t know if I’m captain material. Maybe one day,” Cranston said.

“But I think we’ve got a few other girls that are probably more suited to it.

“But I definitely see myself as a leader.

“You never know.”

Cranston played 13 games for the Demons after being drafted in 2016 after impressing with the Western Bulldogs in the AFL’s women’s exhibition series.

She says her time at Melbourne, as well as with the Cats at VFL level, has helped her develop on and off the field.

“I think Melbourne helped me a lot, just making me a better person, so making me a better leader,” Cranston said.

“The VFL side this year, I was introduced into the leadership team, and that helped me grow a lot.

“And the younger ones helped me as a person and a leader, and I think they’re making us better people and better players coming through such an elite program.

“I’m hoping I can be in the leadership team. If not, just be the leader for the girls.”

Cranston admits she’s been counting down the 58 days since Geelong contested the VFLW grand final against Hawthorn, adding she doesn’t enjoy breaks.

“I definitely got a whiteboard and ruled it all up,” she said. “So, I’ve been crossing out the days and all the pre-pre-season running.

“That’s been hard, so I’m a bit nervous to see what tonight’s going to be like. But, super excited.

“I don’t really like breaks. We had two weeks right after the grand final, and that felt like forever.

“So, I’m happy to get back into it.”
