Lions marching towards finals

BRISBANE has moved to the top of the AFLW’s Conference A with a thumping 28-point win over GWS at Hickey Park on Sunday.

The Lions led at every change in the Round 4 clash, completing a 7.9 (51) to 3.5 (23) victory to move above North Melbourne with three wins and a draw from their matches so far in 2020.

The Giants sit third on the conference ladder with two wins and two losses.

Cathy Svarc had a great game for the hosts, kicking two goals and picking up 23 disposals and 11 tackles.

Tall forward Jess Wardlaw also kicked two goals to move to the top of the AFLW goalkicking charts.

The Lions win sets up a blockbuster clash with fellow unbeaten team Fremantle in Western Australia next Sunday after the Dockers made four wins from four with a one-point victory over St Kilda.

As well as Svarc, the Lions were well led by midfield star Emily Bates who had a goal and 15 disposals by halftime.

Bates would end the match with 24 touches, six clearances and six inside 50s.

It was a tough trip north in hot and humid conditions for the Giants, whose best period of play was in the second quarter but they were still outgunned two goals to one in that term by the Lions.

Star midfielder Alyce Parker spent time off the ground in the second term after a hit by Lions forward Jess Wuetschner but returned for the second half.

That was just one hit in a tough day for Parker, who was on the receiving end of plenty of physical attention from the Lions throughout the match.

While the Lions take on the Dockers in a mouthwatering clash next weekend, the Giants will be eager to bounce back to winning ways when they host winless Richmond next Saturday.
