Injury blows for Cats’ women

GEELONG is counting the cost of its first interstate trip with injuries to vice-captain Anna Teague and Lara Williams further souring a 65-point loss to NT Thunder at Darwin’s TIO Stadium.

Williams will have scans early this week, with the Cats fearing she ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament in the opening moments of the first quarter, while Teague was forced into a sling in the second term of the 13.7 (85) to 2.8 (20) defeat with a shoulder concern.

“It was disappointing to be down a couple of rotations, but, more significantly, on Lara’s injury and for that to happen in the first 10 seconds, it’s a real shame for her, and we wish her well with the news on her knee,” coach Paul Hood said.

“Anna’s got an injury to her shoulder. Exactly what it is at this stage, the medicos aren’t sure on, but we’ll investigate that further and find out in the next few days.”

The Thunder burst of the blocks, kicking four goals in the opening quarter to lead by 25 points.

“The message at quarter time was to be a bit safer with the ball,” Hood said.

“We fought pretty hard in the back 10 minutes of the quarter and in the second quarter we worked really well to get back into the game and kick some points.

“But what we needed to do, though, was just look after the ball a bit more.

“The Thunder came at us really hard, they got their tails up, and we found it difficult to stop until we got together at quarter time.

“We were much better in the second quarter, OK in the third, and dropped away pretty significantly in the last quarter once the injuries wore us down.”

Danni Orr and Richelle Cranston kicked a goal apiece for Geelong, with Cranston, Maddi Boyd, Maddy McMcMahon, Amy McDonald, Madeline Keryk and captain Bec Goring battling hard.

The Cats, who have dropped to fourth following its consecutive losses, host Southern Saints at Deakin University’s Elite Sports Precinct next Saturday.
