DRYSDALE has landed a massive coaching coup as it looks to expand its women’s football program in 2019.

Ahead of a Come and Try Day at Mortimer Oval on Sunday, the Hawks have confirmed the appointment of two-time All-Australian and five-time Victorian representative Lauren Bazeley as coach of its newly-formed under-18 team.

Bazeley, who played with both St Albans and St Kilda in the VWFL competition, became involved with Drysdale after moving to the region.

“I had a friend who played here, and she said it was a really good club and everyone was really nice and very inviting,” she said.

“I knew that the women’s league was really new, so I didn’t want to go to a club that was starting out; I wanted to go to a club that was established.”

Having had an assistant coaching role at St Kilda, Bazeley is keen to take charge of her own team.

“I’ve been in leadership groups and stuff like that, so I considered myself a leader on the field,” she said.

“I’m also a PE (physical education) teacher, so I’ve coached a lot of different sports over the years.

“I really enjoy coaching, and I’m pretty competitive, so I’ve got big plans for the girls next year.”

Meanwhile, inaugural AFL Barwon Women’s Rookie of the Year Gabby Deller has committed full-time to Drysdale for the 2019 season.

Deller split her time in 2018 between the Hawks and Richmond’s VFLW team but has chosen to take a step back next year.

The talented teenager is uncertain whether she will have another crack at VFL level in 2020.

“I just want to play a season with Drysdale and see how I go,” Deller said.

“It was great (at Richmond). The skill, drills and fundamentals you learn through those programs are amazing.”

Sunday’s Come and Try Day will be held from 12pm-2pm at Mortimer Oval. For more information contact Stuart Craven on 0417 010 364.
