Falcons Girls take top spot

ANOTHER impressive defensive effort has seen the Geelong Falcons claim top spot on the TAC Cup Girls ladder.

For the second time in the opening month of the season, the Falcons have kept their opponent goalless, restricting Oakleigh to just three behinds in a 70-point victory at Warrawee Park.

The win keeps Geelong unbeaten after found rounds and boosted their percentage to 354.72%, 70 per cent more than the second-placed Northern Knights.

“It was an awesome effort,” coach Jason Armistead said.

“They (Oakleigh) had an opportunity in the last quarter (to kick a goal). They got over the back into an open goal, but one of our girls put on enough pressure to miss the goal.

“It’s just those little things that will be important when it’s a close game.

“The girls’ mindset has been awesome.”

At the other end of the ground, former Charger Renee Tierney came back to haunt her former teammates with four goals, giving her seven from three matches, while midfielder Olivia Purcell was named the Falcons’ best for a third consecutive game,

“She’s a four-quarter player. She rarely has a bad quarter,” Armistead said.

“If she does, the next quarter she comes out even harder.

“She got on the end of a couple as well and kicked a couple of goals.

“It’s just that extra little bit you look for in a midfielder.”

The Falcons will be hoping to stretch their winning run when they travel to Epsom Huntly Reserve, near Bendigo, for a meeting with the Murray Bushrangers.

However, Armistead will be forced into four changes, with Purcell, Nina Morrison, Denby Taylor and captain Lucy McEvoy all on AFL Academy duty, which includes a game against Geelong’s VFLW team at GMHBA Stadium next Tuesday night.
