GEELONG are continuing to assemble it list for its inaugural, unveiling six more signings on Tuesday night.

Cassie Blakeway, Kate Darby, Renee Garing, Bec Goring, Jordan Ivey and Danni Orr (nee’ Higgins) are all part of the Cats’ VFLW squad, and join Mel Hickey, Richelle Cranston, Anna Teague and Erin Hoare as the first 10 players locked away for 2019.

“We have said from the outset that we will have a heavy focus on providing pathways and opportunity for local players to progress to the highest level of the game,” AFLW coach Paul Hood said.

“These six players have demonstrated through their ability, performance, dedication and values that they deserve a place on our 2019 AFLW list.

“We are encouraged by the fact that we have a balance of players that have strong background in football, along with players that made the switch to the game with the advent of the AFLW.”

Ivey, who is recovering from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament suffered in Round 2 of the 2017 VFLW season, and Darby have both tasted AFLW action, playing with Carlton in 2017.

Orr is the sister of current North Melbourne star Shaun Higgins.

Women’s Football Strategy and Pathways Manager Simone Bellears said the Cats are keen to make the AFLW side representative of the Geelong region, but are also mindful of bringing in players with experience in the game’s top flight.

“We are excited to have secured such a talented group of women and will continue to build our list with an eye for the long-term success of the team and the game in this region,” Bellears said.

“These are exciting times and we believe we will see even greater participation in the region with this announcement.

“The club will continue to discuss playing opportunities with players currently at other AFLW clubs as we build the list ahead of the 2019 season.”
