Cat claims under 18 medal

GEELONG Falcons listed Taiya Morrow has taken out the AFL Barwon under-18 Division 1 best-and-fairest in a thrilling count.

The Lara young gun was able to overrun last year’s winner Stephanie Williams, who missed four of the final five games of the home-and-away season, to claim a one-vote victory.

With grading game votes included, Williams had polled 15 votes to the end of Round 4 of the home-and-away season.

At that stage, Morrow was on 11 votes but picked up two votes in Round 6 and three in Round 8 to take the lead on 16 votes.

Neither player polled in the final round.

Geelong Amateur’s Poppy Schaap finished third with 14 votes after ending the season with consecutive best-on-ground performances.

Morrow’s impressive season also resulted in her being named the overall Spirit of Sport winner, with the Cats named the leading club.

Lucy Were from Ammos received the goal kicking award after kicking 27 majors for the season.
