Falcons snap Cats’ streak

COACH Natalie Wood was remaining focused on the positives despite Geelong’s 16-point loss to Darebin in heavy conditions at Preston City Oval that cost it a chance to move into the VFL Women’s top six.

The Cats, who has won four consecutive games before last week’s bye, overcame an early two-goal deficit to lead the second-last placed Falcons following a goal in the opening stages of the final term before the home team pulled away for a 6.5 (41) to 4.1 (25) victory.

Despite the defeat, Wood says her young group will have learned some lessons.

“In the second quarter, we tightened up the work around the contest, and (Becky) Webster started to learn a bit from (Elise) O’Dea about how to play on her and was able to shut her down a little bit,” Wood said.

“Rene Caris played on (Lauren) Pearce all day, and Rene was able to win some footy down the line and run off her, which was excellent.

However, it was young defender Denby Taylor who Wood was most impressed with.

“She was reading the ball really well; the backs were under siege a bit,” Wood said.

“Her ball use coming off the backline, and her composure; she was so clean on groundballs – the deck was really wet, but Denby was outstanding.”

A lack of discipline cost the Cats early as Falcons pair Nell Morris-Dalton and Georgia Hammond kicked the first majors of the match.

“We gave away a number of 50m penalties and they were able to get on the scoreboard easily,” Wood said.

“And their forwards were getting separation and marking inside 50.

“They were also playing with a fair bit of spirit with one of their players (Lauren Arnell) playing their 200th game.

“And when you’ve got quality midfielders like Lauren Pearce, and O’Dea, and Arnell, once they start well, with their experience, they’re hard to peg back.”

Geelong will look to keep its finals hopes alive when it hosts NT Thunder at Queen’s Park in Highton next Sunday.
