OUT-of-favour small forward Luke Dahlhaus has turned in an impressive midfield performance to lead a depleted Geelong to a 19-point VFL win over North Melbourne at Arden Street.

With Gary Rohan and Shannon Neale the only two other AFL listed players in the Cats’ lineup, Dahlhaus ensured he remained top of the coaching staff’s thoughts with a 25-disposal, four-clearance performance in the 10.17 (77) to 8.10 (58) victory.

“We played him as an inside mid basically all day, and he just hunts the ball,” coach Shane O’Bree told K rock Football.

“He won a lot of ball with quality, (and) his attitude was fantastic.

“The last three or four weeks, he’s been that guy that’s been under the pump, and been the medi-sub, and not knowing where you are week in, week out.

“But he came back with a great attitude and played really well.”

Rohan, who was playing his second game of the season at any level after a back issue, was able to get through a full game, gathering 17 disposals and taking eight marks.

However, when he makes an AFL return remains up in the air.

“Today, he showed he’s on the right path,” O’Bree said. “Do you rush him in? Or has he done enough? It’s always the dilemma.

“I’m sure he’ll come into contention this week. It’s more the S&C (strength and conditioning) people and the AFL coaches getting together and seeing whether they need to bring him in or we get another game into him.”

Scott Carlin and Jye Chalcraft stood out with 20 disposals each of the VFL contingent, while co-captains Matt Ling and Jackson McLachlan also had an influence.

Ling had 17 disposals and took seven marks, while McLachlan kicked 3.2 from 13 disposals.

Geelong, which sits in ninth spot with a 4-2 win-loss record, will have its second bye of the season next weekend before returning in Round 9 for a meeting with the Northern Bullants at Preston.
