Atkins named Cats’ VFL best

TOM Atkins may have given his AFL draft hopes a boost after winning his second Geelong VFL best-and-fairest in three years.

Atkins, who won the award in 2016, bounced back from an injury-plagued 2017 to score a comfortable victory.

The midfielder, who was also named in the VFL Team of the Year, finished on 413 votes, with delisted AFL swingman Timm House second on 345.

Last year’s winner James Tsitas four votes further back in third spot on 341.

Ruckman Zac Smith (331 votes) and first-year forward Gryan Miers (319) rounded out the top five.

Geelong’s voting system sees each player ranked out of 15 on two scorecards – one from the coach and the other combined from the assistant coaches.

Those scoreboards are combined and the player is given a total score out of 30, with their best 18 (out of 20) matches becoming the final tally.
