DARCY Moloney doesn’t need to be reminded of the big shoes she is filling after being named captain of the Geelong Falcons Girls team for 2020.

The 17-year-old from Colac Imperials becomes just the Falcons second captain in its short four-year history, following in the footsteps of Carlton draftee Lucy McEvoy, who held the role for three seasons.

“As soon as Susie (Robinson, assistant coach) told me I’d got it (the captaincy), I thought “that’s a bit of pressure”, Moloney said.

“Lucy was such a good captain and such a good player.

“I’ve got a lot to live up to, but I’ve just got to be my own player, be my own captain, and put that out of my mind.

“She’s a great person to look up to and model my leadership on because she was such a good leader.”

Moloney will head up a four-member leadership group also featuring Poppy Schaap, Renee Tierney and Lucy Were.

The talented midfielder is no stranger to leadership roles, having led netball teams at Irrewarra-Beeac and holding a position as a house captain at Colac’s Trinity College.

“I’m a hype woman; I get around everyone, and I’m always happy to be here,” Moloney said.

“I’m not afraid to say something when I need to or help the girls out if they need help.

“I just try to be really friendly and happy.”

While Moloney’s immediate focus is the NAB League season starting on February 29, she also has designs on representing Vic Country at under-18 level mid-year and then finding herself on an AFL list come October.

“Like every girl, the ambition is to get drafted and play AFLW,” she said.

“But, on a smaller scale, have a good year with the Falcons. I want to see all the girls succeed and hopefully take home a premiership.

“But to get drafted is my goal this year.”
