Senior women, under 19s axed

UNCERTAINTY around the easing of restrictions to allow contact sport to go ahead in Victoria has left AFL Barwon with no choice but to cancel the Senior Women’s and under-19 seasons.

Both competitions were due to start on the weekend of August 1-2 before the Victorian Government rolled back plans for a return to play due to a spike in COVID-19 cases across the state.

The decision was made by the AFL Barwon Commission on Wednesday night.

“The cancellation of these competitions is incredibly disappointing, however it was seen as the only viable decision in the best interest of all clubs, participants and the wider region,” AFL Barwon said in a statement.

”With the previously slated August 1 resumption of Under 19s and August 2 for Senior Female Football removed following the State Government announcement, AFL Barwon and its Commission believe a further modified season would not have been fair or feasible for all concerned.

“Analysis was undertaken by AFL Barwon operations staff to explore the possibility of an 18 and under football and netball competition, but this was also determined not to be viable.”

However, AFL Barwon has confirmed  all competitions from under-17 down will commence as fixtured this weekend.
